Reading Periods

We have four reading periods with a month off in between, on the following schedule:

Winter issue: reading from October 15th to December 15th

Spring issue: reading from January 15th to March 15th

Summer issue: reading from April 15th to June 15th

Fall issue: reading from July 15th to September 15th

Any submissions received between reading periods will be read when the next reading period begins. We will occasionally have themed issues, but will consider submissions that fall outside of the theme as well.

Submissions of artwork will remain open year round.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking to publish short and flash fiction, poetry, word art, and artwork that can be considered “strange and beautiful.” That’s open to interpretation. Literary (and generally light) sci fi and fantasy, magical realism, or just literary stories that are kind of quirky and/or adorable. We especially like those stories that hover between the mythic and the mundane.

We are committed to publishing works by a diverse population of artists, and encourage submissions from underrepresented groups and marginalized populations. We especially would like to feature the work of women, people of color, disabled and neurodivergent writers and artists, and queer, trans* genderqueer, nonbinary, and two spirit people.

New Writers

In addition, it is our goal to publish at least one piece by a previously unpublished writer in each issue. If you’re a student writer or your work hasn’t been published before, please note it in your cover letter. With every issue, we will spotlight a debut publication on our website among our featured pieces.

Format, Etc.

Please include a brief bio (about 50 words), word count, and genre in your email and attach your submission as a .doc, .docx, or .rtf file.

We strongly prefer standard manuscript format and ask that you please use times new roman or courier font, 12 point, 1 inch margins.

We will read stories longer than 6,000 words, but are unlikely to publish them. 1,000-4,000 is ideal. Likewise, we prefer poetry that tends toward the short and sweet rather than the epic.

We happily accept simultaneous submissions as long as you inform us at the time of the submission and notify us immediately if your submission has been accepted elsewhere.

We do not accept reprints of literature, but may accept reprints of artwork. Please query at: kaaterskillbasin [at] gmail [dot] com.

We ask that you wait until you hear from us before submitting another piece. We aim to respond to all submissions within 2-4 weeks of receipt.

We are all volunteers and unfortunately cannot pay our contributors, but that may change in the future.

Legalese:

Upon acceptance, we acquire the first North American serial rights to publish, produce, reproduce, distribute, and market the electronic version of the Work in Publication. All other, remaining rights revert to the Author upon publication. The Author agrees to refrain from selling or giving rights to another publication for one year from the date of this agreement and contract.

Thank you and we hope to read your work!
